November 10, 2012

It takes me a while to pack up my tent. I see my chain is a bit loose so I get some tools and adjust it accordingly. It takes me a while to get on the road again. I drive to Rijeka and from there I follow the Croatian coast to Dubrovnik. The coastal road is amazing! The weather is beautiful, not to hot but still warm. It’s the first day I ride without heated grips.

Venice-Lucija

I’m heading off to Trieste without a place to sleep yet. I find a big shopping mall with free WiFi and make plans for tonight. Since I have a hard time finding a cheap place to sleep I decide to go wild camping in Slovenia. But first I use my Garmin to tour myself around Trieste. Read More

November 6, 2012

We get up early to disassemble Jurjen’s bike for airplane transport as he’s flying back to Amsterdam tomorrow. We walk around Milan to see the city and shop for a new Camera Connection Kit for my iPad. I forgot to take it with me. I hope this is the only thing I forgot. In the evening we have another great meal and have a beer at a bar. Read More

Konstanz-Milan

Switzerland is beautiful! I’m wondering why I would ride ride all the way to Singapore when it’s so pretty not far away from home. Oh yeah, I don’t have a home, or a job. I’m taking a detour to the Stelvio pass. Eloquently described by Jeremy Clarkson as ’15 miles of asphalt draped on an alp’. Read More

Frankfurt-Konstanz

The alarm clock on my phone was set to 07:00. I don’t need it as I’m awake at 06:00. I think now is a good time to try the WiFi again. This time it works and I find a hostel in Konstanz at the Bodensee. I take a shower, plan my route and have breakfast. I take some extra with me for along the way.

Amsterdam-Frankfurt

Today is the day. Yesterday my new tires arrived on which I’ve been waiting for more than a week. After an afternoon struggle with the rear axle it finally came out. A stuck rear axle is a common problem. The advice the internet gave me: ‘Use a hammer, if that doesn’t work; use an even bigger hammer’. We replaced my old rear tire so I could begin my trip on fresh rubber. Read More

Apple iPad 2
Hate it or love it. I do both. It’s small, fast and I wouldn’t live without it. Unfortunately you can’t do shit with it outside the realms of Steve Jobs imagination. Read More

My alarm clock rings at 6:30. I’m instantly awake. That’s something that doesn’t happen often, especially when I’m unable to fall asleep. I think I even saw the alarm clock jump to 04:00. Man, am I nervous! I quickly make some sandwiches, drink a cup of coffee and print the train schedule. Read More

This is by far the least entertaining aspect of preparing an overland trip. The paperwork takes a lot of time and might even seem overwhelming. You also have to time everything right. If you apply too early the Visa will be expired before you even get there. If you apply to late you can’t leave. The visa for Pakistan has to be applied for in your home country and requires an Iranian visa and maybe even an Indian visa. Read More

Bike

My bike is a BMW F650GS from ’00. I bought it in May, 2012 especially for this trip. It had about 9000km on the clock, by now that’s 16.500km, most of that kilometres are from a weekend trips to South England and Germany. The bike is reliable and economical. It should get around 4L/100km (58 MPG) although I never got anywhere near that number. More like 5l/100km (47 MPG). Maybe that’s due to my driving, it lacks a bit of power so I really have to step on it to keep up with the 600cc racers that my friends have. Read More
